A27 - Through to the Second Stage!

6/16/2014

Councillor Caroline Ansell writes:

‘After a suitably trying journey on the A27 to the meeting about the A27 - and nearly three hours  of debate and presentation later - all was rewarded in the final five minutes of  the meeting; under ‘Final Conclusions & Recommendations to Stage 1’ the  stretch between Polegate and Lewes made it through to the Second Stage.

This is an important milestone in a Department for Transport study which could mean serious nvestment in the road, improving safety and unlocking economic potential for Eastbourne and the surrounding area. I’m delighted, but there’s a long way to go yet.
As one participant put it, we are at risk of meeting again in another ten years’ time if we can’t find a deliverable solution. And there were many different views in the room on what – if anything – was needed: real time traffic information boards and reducing demand for travel were both put
forward as alternatives to road building.

Having now attended A27 Reference Group meetings in Brighton and, this week, in Worthing, I’ve
asked organisers to look to Eastbourne for August’s meeting.

It would be excellent for DfT and Highway’s officers - and for all stakeholders along the A27 corridor - to experience what it means to a town like Eastbourne (especially in the light of our aspirations around the Devonshire Park and conferencing trade) to be served by one of the most
unreliable and unsafe trunk roads in the country.

I’m going to keep campaigning for investment that will dramatically improve the lives of
Eastbourne & Willingdon constituents and businesses’

-------- ENDS ------

We urge you to add your thoughts about the A27 to the
short ACES Business survey we
have created.  It is just 5 questions long and will help us add your voice to the 872 other people who have responded so far.  The more people who complete the survey, the louder our voice will be and the nearer we will get to an A27 that is fit for purpose.

ACES lobby for an upgraded A27

Christina Ewbank of ACES and Eastbourne Councillor Caroline Ansell get some important messages across to Patrick McLoughlin, the Secretary of State for Transport about the weakness of the East Sussex road infrastructure; particularly the A27 and the A21.  To boost the local economy we also lobbied for a second runway at Gatwick Airport with improved road links to it.

The A27 between Polegate and Lewes has already been included on the 2014 Strategic Roads Review so we focused on the A27.  The main area of interest for the Minister was how any road upgrade would boost the economy of East Sussex and provide more jobs.

We had plenty of ammunition having surveyed the business community and residents of Eastbourne but we need to know what you think in the rest of East Sussex.  In Eastbourne:
  • A massive 53% of businesses said they would employ more staff if the A27 were
    upgraded
  • 43% of businesses said they had lost customers due to the condition of the A27 while
  • 14% of businesses have lost contracts
  • 20% of businesses had considered relocating because of the A27
  • 97% of businesses said more tourists would help the economy grow
And
  • 60% of residents said the current A27 has a significant impact on the prosperity of
    Eastbourne
  • 91% of residents described the A27 as an unsafe road while 68% had actually experienced an accident or near miss

One respondent alone said:
“We estimate losing provisionally booked conference business of £700,000 annually purely because of poor road links and the experience of these by potential [conference] bookers”

If we can bring major conferences back to Eastbourne throughout the year, imagine the boost to East Sussex hotels, restaurants, pubs and shops.

We are designing a survey to canvass opinion about the A27 across East Sussex and will post it here very soon.

Help Upgrade the A27

Please take 2 minutes to complete our short business survey to help us lobby to upgrade the A27 between Lewes and Polegate.  We believe this will help boost the economy in East Sussex so let us know what you think.

We are also interested in your views as a resident, so please complete this very short residents survey.

We have already held a meeting with Rob Goodwill the Under Parliamentary Secretary for Road Transport and as a result they have included this section of the A27 in their Strategic Roads Review which includes only seven roads in total.  So it's really important that we follow this up with lots of research and data from the community.

We also are also meeting the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP tomorrow.  This will include the A27, a second runways for Gatwick and the A21.

We will publish the results of our surveys on this website soon.
